I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of the show Diner’s, Drive-In’s, and Dives. This may be because the Food Network plays it for hours at a time each day. It may also be because every time I watch the show, I practically drool all over myself with glee. For someone who is trying to eat healthy, it’s hard to watch restaurants make bacon wrapped, cheese topped, Paula Dean approved (read: covered in butter) dishes.
In fact, the food is so good looking that it’s always a struggle to watch Triple D and not immediately get in the car, drive to a diner, and order everything on the menu.
Luckily, I am usually pretty strong. Of course, every once in a while you just have to be bad–and when I want to be bad, I go to Luvy Duvy’s.
Luvy Duvy’s is the place in St. Louis that, in my professional opinion, would be a perfect feature for Triple D. In fact, I’ll be honest, I’ve even emailed Diner’s, Drive In’s, and Dives to suggest it (still waiting to hear back from Guy…cross your fingers!).
Anyway, enough about my favorite Food Network show… let’s talk about why I think Luvy Duvy’s is worthy of being on food TV!
First of all, if I have to classify Luvy Duvy’s as one of the three Triple D genres… it is probably best qualified as a “dive”; however, it is so much more than that! This quaint little cafe on Jefferson Avenue has all of the qualities that a Triple D eatery should have. We’re talking about amazing but simple food and that awesome “know the regulars” friendly service!
So, here’s the grade:
Food: A
Service: A-
Attitude: A
Price: A
First let’s talk atmosphere and attitude. Now, this may seem like an exaggeration, but Luvy Duvy’s is just one of those places that makes you feel like you’re at home. When you walk in it doesn’t matter who you are–you are immediately greeted with friendly smiles, a “hey darlin’” or “hey sweetie!”, and the overwhelming scent of good ole’ griddle cookin’.
Plus, the owners seem to have impecable memories. Here’s an example. Luvy Duvy’s is down the street from my place of employment and for the first two years that I worked at CPH, my coworkers and I frequented the amazing establishment. Unfortunately, my purse strings got tighter and my work schedule got busier–and I haven’t been able to get to LD’s for six months. Nonetheless, when I was there for lunch today, I was pleased to find that the owner stopped by the table, recognized me, and even remembered my favorite dish! What an amazing atmosphere.
Now, let’s talk food. Basically, EVERYTHING you order at Luvy Duvy’s will make your mouth water (in fact, mine is right now just thinking about it). I have tried many of Luvy’s dishes and each of them has been like a party in my mouth!
They have a cuban sandwich that is grilled up to perfection and served on sweet buttery bread, a ½ pound cheeseburger that melts in your mouth, spice cake that tastes like heaven, and much more!
Now, although I do enjoy everything at Luvy Duvy’s, my all time favorite dish is the Benton Park Sandwich. Think loads of buttery, moist turkey, fresh avocado slices, melted swiss cheese, mayo, and honey wheat bread–all grilled to perfection on the flat iron. Now, that’s a sandwich. (Oh, and it’s especially good when you add a little bacon… but, who’s surprised by that?)
As if the amazing food wasn’t enough, the price is really reasonable. Pretty much every dish is $10 or less (and you’ll never leave hungry). Truthfully, the only thing that I really have a quip with is that the food can take a little bit of time to get to the table—today’s meal took a good 45 minutes. But, heck, Luvy Duvy’s has such a laid back attitude, that it doesn’t usually matter (unless I’m in a rush to get back to work!).
Overall, Luvy Duvy’s is my go-to place. When I need a little-known eatery to share with a friend, when I need my own Diner’s, Drive In’s, and Dives fix, when I want to feel like a regular–this is where I go. Here’s to hoping that Guy and the Triple D team will respond to my email and the rest of the country will know about Luvy Duvy’s soon!
Happy eating everyone!
